Dermal Fillers
Dermal fillers are gels of Hyaluronic Acid (HA), a natural substance that gives the skin hydration and elasticity
Dermal fillers are gels that are injected under the top layer of skin, into the dermis. The gel contains Hyaluronic Acid, a naturally-occuring polymer, which is responsible for skin healing and repair. It hydrates the skin and gives it elasticity. With age, as the skin sags and deeper wrinkles form, Hyaluronic acid can be used to restore a more youthful appearance
Hyaluronic acid fillers last between 6-18 months, depending on the type of filler used and the location it is injected in
Static Lines
Fillers can fill in the static lines of the face, and give volume to other tissues like the lips and cheeks
Fillers are able to give volume to the furrows on the face which are not dependent on facial expression (static lines), e.g. Marionette lines, Naso-Labial folds, Glabellar lines & Tear Troughs. In addition, fillers can add volume and definition to the lips and cheeks.
At Lumina, we only use fillers sourced from a UK-based pharmacy and from a reputable manufacturer. Products derived from a non-animal source can be prescribed upon request
Unlike Botulinum Toxin treatment, Dermal fillers can be a little painful to have done. Whilst most products come with some anaesthetic mixed in with the Hyaluronic acid, we would be happy to numb the areas being injected (with a dental anaesthetic injection) to make sure you are comfortable throughout.
Some patients may opt to have an anaesthetic cream applied to the area prior to treatment. This can take up to 20 minutes to take effect, so please get in touch with us for advice prior to your appointment

Risks & Complications
Dermal fillers are safe when applied by a properly trained operator, but can have unwanted complications
The effect of Dermal fillers is evident straight away, although in the case of lip fillers at the end of treatment, the lip will appear more swollen than expected because of some post-operative inflammation. Cases of asymmetry can therefore be addressed straight away.
If fillers are injected too superficially into the skin, they can appear like nodules. In this instance they can be removed via a small incision
The most common side effects of dermal fillers include: discomfort, swelling, bleeding, ulceration or bruising at the injection site.
Other side effects may include redness or scarring at the injection site, compression of small nerves in the skin and the blockage of blood vessels under the skin. Your practitioner will be happy to guide you through your options and the associated complications
